Fast Food on a Budget

May 24, 2014 By: veronicacomment

fast food on a budget

Fast Food is something we used to spend a lot of money on – before we had the budget! Fast food is easy when you have no time or no power to think about what to eat. But to be honest it is quite expensive and for the most part a bit disappointing as it is seldom as good as you imagine it to be.

So we have cut down our fast food purchase to one or twice a month, but it doesn’t mean that we (and especially the kids) once in a while have a craving for something like that.
Preparing fast food at home is of course a bit more work than buying it from someone else, but I think that it is worth it. It is definitely cheaper, you can use better quality products and one of the top advantages is that in most of these dishes, the kids can more or less decide what they want the dish to include.

Here are some ideas:

Hamburger – A classic meal that the kids love most of all. While I mostly bake the buns myself, the kids prefer the store bought so mostly we have those (also, it makes preparation time much shorter). The meat patties I make myself (about 6 patties out of 500 g of ground beef) and then we just add vegetables, ketchup and mayo!

Pizza – This is a close second and something that we make quite often. The dough is quite easy to prepare and on top of that you add tomato sauce, toppings, cheese and bake on full power for 10-15 minutes.

Chicken Nuggets – Another classic and loved dish. Mostly I serve with oven baked Potato Wedges, but lately I have found that Carrot Fries are a bit healthier alternative that they also love.

Chicken Tempura – This is actually just another version of the Chicken Nuggets that the kids call Japanese Chicken….

Pita Breads – My eldest is crazy about Shawarma and by serving her Pita breads with chicken strips, salad and Humus she says that it is almost the same 🙂 (and again, to cut the preparation time you don’t have to bake, store bought Pita Breads are good as well.)

Have a nice week.
