Almost every child comes to that stage where they want to decide for themselves what they want to wear. I know that mine had. Someone very clever (unfortunately, I don’t remember who) told me that the thing to do, is to give them two choices. Not more and not less. That way they have a choice, but it is limited. It is really a very good advice that at least in this family, has prevented many discussions and tantrums.
When I was in about the third grade I had a teacher that was very into minimalism concerning his wardrobe. I don’t remember the exact numbers but I do remember that he had a certain amount of every piece of clothing in his closet and it wasn’t a lot. His claim was (and probably still is) that anyway we almost don’t wear any of the clothes that we have so why have so many?
At the time I thought he was a little crazy, but today I am starting to believe that he had a point. In my opinion we have way too much stuff and I think it would be interesting to measure how much of the things we have, we actually use during each day, week, month or even year!
There is this thing called the Pareto principle or the 80-20- rule. It says that in most things a 80/20 distribution can be observed. Like for example that 80% of all wealth is owned by 20% of the people. Or that 80% of most business’ income come from 20% of their customers.
When it comes to clothes, I know that I have too much and that there is lots that I never wear. I think that I can rightfully claim that about 80% of the time I wear about 20% of my clothes. So maybe I should just get it over with and clean out all that clothes that I never wear? Or maybe someone would be kind enough to present me with two choices every time I would have to get dressed?
Either way, it would be great to get rid of the clutter and I am sure that it would save me a lots of time, and essentially, money.
How does your closet look and what are your thoughts on the subject? I would love to hear your opinions!
