Growing up Hanukkah was my favorite holiday. It was a holiday my mother made the most of and that is probably why I loved it so much. Growing up in a country where most of my friends celebrated Christmas and got tons of presents my parents did the best they could to compensate, and I think they did a pretty good job.
The tradition was that my mother bought my sister and I a gift for every night of the holiday. All eight gifts times two were lined up in the living room and each night we could choose one. I still remember the excitement of looking at each gift carefully and making the difficult (:-)) choice of which gift to take.
Today we lit the first light of Hanukkah and each one got a gift. For them it will be just that one gift since they also get presents at the other holidays, but maybe I have to think a bit and come up with something similar to what I had growing up….
This is the Hanukkiah (or Hanukkah Menorah) that we made today. Heavily inspired from Martha Stewart and with the help of a very good friend who cut out the wood blocks for me. Other than that is was just a bit of sanding them down, drilling a whole for the light and painting the blocks and almost didn’t cost a thing.
Happy Holidays!
