Whereas my eldest knew exactly what she wanted to dress up as this year, my youngest had lots of ideas and a hard time choosing. When we saw this Lumberjack costume by Make it & Love It, we knew that we had found it! In the post Ashley explains very well how to make both beard and axe and even has printable templates.
Since this boy has an aversion to anything with buttons, we had to look elsewhere for the button-down shirt. I went to the local second-hand shop and turn out they had plenty and even also suspenders!
For the beard I used the template and sewed it according to the instruction, but from felt as that was what I had.
For the axe we used a bamboo stick, some thick carton, glue, acrylic paint and some string. In the original version she glued the carton onto the stick, where as we (dear husband!) found that it works better to make a slit in the top part of the stick and wedge the carton in between.
It is really a great costume with many parts, but not that hard to make and quite cheap. He is happy and excited and even agreed to a photo session. If nothing else, he has been playing so much with the axe, that just for that, it was worth it 🙂
