I still remember the first time I tasted peanut butter – about 25 years ago at one of my best friend’s house. It wasn’t instant love and truth is that it is only in recent years that I have started to eat it again.
If you are reading here regularly you might have noticed that I have been adding more and more things that we prepare from scratch (and if you are not, welcome :-)) both for health and budgetary reasons.
I have been thinking for a while to make peanut butter and by research on the net, it is really very easy; roasted peanuts blended in a food processor with a bit of salt – that’s basically it! And now for the more detailed explanation:
What I used
200 grams raw peanuts
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
½ teaspoon salt
What I did
First I roasted the peanuts on a dry skillet for a few minutes while stirring them all the time. I let them cool for a few minutes and then removed the skins.
I added the nuts together with the oil and salt to the food processor and mixed for about 5 minutes until it formed a smooth paste. And yes, it feels like a really long time, especially if you are impatient like me, but in the end it does happen!
I like to eat the peanut butter as it is, with an apple or like the Americans with jelly or jam. It is also really good to cook with like in this chicken recipe or this soup recipe. And let us not forget how good it is in something sweet so go ahead and try these cookies.
So, is it good? I am not an expert but to me it is quite alright – I know exactly what went into it and the cost was a bit cheaper than the store bought kind……
