Woke up this morning to a bored and slightly annoying five-year-old who wanted to “do something”. Wanting to cook or bake something with him, I looked through our pantry and found a bag of hazelnuts that I forgot that I had. Do it yourself “Nutella” has been on my list to do for a while, so why not today?
Here is what we used:
1 cup hazelnuts
A bit less than ½ cup confectioners’ sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla sugar
2 tablespoons cocoa
1 tablespoon oil
A little bit of salt
Upgrade! Instead of cocoa you can add 100 grams milk chocolate and 25 grams of dark chocolate. Melt the chocolate in a small pot and add at the very end.
This is how we did it:
Heat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius. Spread out the nuts on a baking sheet and bake in the oven for 10 minutes, mixing them a bit halfway through.
Let the nuts cool a bit and then place them in a bowl with a lid. Shake it for a little while until most of the skins have come off. Place the nuts (it doesn’t matter if there is a little of the skins are left) in the food processor and grind the hazelnuts for a minute. Add the rest of the ingredients and continue processing until you have a smooth paste. It might take a while so be patient (according to my children, I am not!). If you are using chocolate instead of cocoa powder add it now and mix for a few seconds more.
The verdict? Doesn’t exactly taste like Nutella, but much better 🙂
