Doing it yourself – Grandmother Style

My great love for strawberries is no secret and that is why that I am now a bit sad because the season has already come and gone. Now I have to wait about 9 months before I can have them again.

A few weeks ago I was at the market and bough a big box of strawberries. Being end of season and all, I only got to eat a few before they started to go bad. And that is when I remembered my grandmother’s jams and got the idea for making some myself.

Like almost everything that I do, it all starts with Google and that is where – by combining a few ideas – I came up with this:

What to use:
About 1 kg of cleaned strawberries
1/2 cup sugar

How do do:
Crush the strawberries and add them to a pot (I used a potato masher). Add the sugar and cook on low heat until all the sugar has dissolved. Turn up the heat and cook while boiling for another 10 minutes while stirring.
Transfer the jam to clean jars and let them cool a bit before you put them in the refrigerator.

While I am not my grandmother, I am quite pleased with the result. Bottom line: 10 Shekels (US Dollar 3), 20 minutes of work and strawberries for a little while longer 🙂
