Working out on a budget (or for free!)

October 16, 2014 By: veronicacomment

A few years back I started running. In the beginning it was short distances which took me a long time to finish. From not being able to run a 100 meters without almost fainting I was quite fast able to run 5K! Totally finished at the end, though, but such a rush to be able to do something I did not even dare to dream of.

A year later I joined a local running group with a professional trainer. That was the year that I ran several 10K races and probably reached the best shape of my life. The group was great for many reasons but mostly because it gave me something to be accountable to. Knowing that there is a group of people waiting for me, makes it easier put on the running shoes and get out of the house – even on a rainy day.

The running group was a bit pricy and on top of that, it started to feel a bit repetitive and I felt that I wanted to try something new. So I signed up at the gym. I thought it could be good for me to have some variation exercise wise. At the gym I could both run and train my muscle mass on all the various machines.

For reasons that I cannot explain it was just not it and now a year later I am in more or less in the shape that I was when I first started running….not good.

So I am back to square one, but still feel that I have learned something along the way. I know that I like to run, so I want to continue that and hopefully get back into shape. I know that I need something a more alongside the running, so this is my plan:

I will start running 3 times a week. I know that I am best if I have someone to be accountable to, which will probably be Dear Husband or a girlfriend. In addition, we (Dear Husband and I) have started to work out here at home using an exercise app called “6 week training” (for windows phones, for Android/ Iphone there is a similar app called “Just 6 weeks”). It consists of a daily training program of pushups, sit-ups, dips and squats. It starts out easy and gets harder and harder and it works; after two weeks I am able to do 20 pushups, 140 sit-ups, 15 dips and 170 squats (the before numbers are 4, 20, 5 and 20).

So that is the game plan – getting back into shape without spending any money, just using the resources I already have. I am optimistic and will of course let you know how it goes 🙂
