It is no secret that I love to bake and that is probably also why I am not as thin as I would like to be. I love to make bread, baguettes, buns, cakes and cookies but because that I am not that patient, you will never find me baking a layered cake or some complicated macaroon (although I love those too!).
Some think that it is complicated and time consuming to bake, I can honestly say, that after some practice I do not use more than 10 minutes working time on a bread or a cake. The rest of the time it takes care of itself, raising or in the oven.
So if we look money-wise on the issue here is the breakdown:
Cost of a random bread:
Ingredient | Price NIS | Price USD |
Flour |
5 |
1.5 |
Yeast |
0.75 |
0.25 |
water + salt |
0.25 |
0.1 |
Olive oil |

In this example I have used the most expensive flour I have. Other kinds of cheaper flour will make the bread cheaper than that. But even with that in mind, buying a good quality bread will cost you at least the double (and in most place, you can easily triple that price).

Cost of random chocolate cake:

Most cakes in bakeries or other stores, that are not factory made, will also be sold at a much higher price so also it is possible to save significantly. And as a bonus it is also a nice activity to do with the kids 🙂

So bottom line, try it! It tastes better, the cost is better and you know exactly what you put in it.
Have a nice weekend 🙂
